10 Brain Food for Kids
School season is upon us and the good news is you can add certain foods to your kids’ diet to safely help them boost their brain function, memory and concentration while enhancing their brain growth.
- Salmon: An excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA – both essential for brain growth and function. Recent research has shown that people who get more of these fatty acids in their diet have sharper minds and do better at mental skill tests.
- Eggs: Egg yolk is very rich in choline – a nutrient that helps memory development.
- Peanut butter: Peanuts and peanut butter are a great source of Vitamin E – a powerful antioxidant that protects brain cells. It also contains Thiamin (Vitamin B1) that help the brain and nervous system use glucose for energy.
- Whole grains: The brain needs a constant supply of glucose -- and whole grains provide that in spades. The fiber helps regulate the release of glucose into the body. Whole grains also contain B-Vitamins, which nourish a healthy nervous system.
- Oats: Oats are the ultimate grain for the brain. They provide excellent energy for the brain that kids needs first thing in the morning.
- Berries: Berries are packed with vitamin C and other antioxidants hat can help improve memory. Seeds from berries also contain omega-3 fats that help with brain function.
- Beans: Beans are special because they have energy from protein and complex carbs as well as lots of vitamins and mineral. When kids enjoy them with lunch they keep their energy and thinking levels at peak all afternoon.
- Colorful Veggies: Vegetables with rich deep colors are the best source of antioxidants that protect brain cells and keep them strong and healthy. Look for tomatoes, carrots, spinach, red and yellow pepper, etc…
- Milk and Yoghurt: Dairy foods are very rich in protein and B-Vitamins, both essential for the growth of the brain tissue and nervous system.
- Lean Beef: Lean beef is one of the best absorbed sources of iron, an essential mineral that helps kids stay energized and concentrate at school. It is also rich in Zinc which helps with memory.
